Mission Statement

Brier Books was born on a dinner table
in Lexington, Kentucky, after two poets
discussed how to marry what they love:
reading & community. It’s a mixed kettle
of beans: think rolling hills, think east
Kentucky, think front porch sitting
with iced tea & chosen family.
We choose you to join us on our porch—
all of you. There will be a band of heathens
putting on a play about queer life in Appalachia,
while someone chills in a hammock
writing poetry, and another group gathers
to plan a community garden & farmers’ market
and another reads The New York Times best-
sellers list & talks national trends. Someone whips
out a guitar & a banjo, plays our favorite hymns,
and we all sing-a-long because church
is a gathering of voices and it ain’t holy
unless the doors are open to all. We’re coming
back to the basics, the words & stories we’ve
always loved, and we want you to share your favorites—
yours or someone else’s—we want you here,
with us, helping us create this brier bookshop/
story swap/community gathering space.
